If you live in an urban area, you can still have a great garden! This exhibit features replicas of two house facades inspired by Camden, NJ row homes. The front yards demonstrate street “scaping” in a small space. In the backyards, each family has a different reason for gardening reflected in their own gardening style. The health-conscious family gardens to grow their own produce in raised beds. By growing your own healthy and fresh food, you can control or eliminate chemicals, save at the grocery store and reduce fuel usage by reducing the number of times you travel to the store.
The next-door neighbor gardens for wildlife and the environment. Visitors step through the doorway into the back yard to catch a glimpse of a certified wildlife habitat, where the family selected plants to help meet the food needs of wildlife, especially birds.
The backyard pond and fountain provide water for animals and birds. Trees provide cover and places to raise their young. This family composts, reducing their trash and collects rainwater in a large cistern. This water is used to water the yard, saving water and lowering water bills!
